Normal People – A Love Story That Actually Feels Real
The story follows Connell and Marianne, starting from their school days. Connell is popular, easygoing, and fits in everywhere. Marianne, on the other hand, is more reserved, a bit distant, and doesn’t really care about what others think. They’re very different, but somehow, they connect in a way that’s hard to explain.
One thing that really stood out to me was how Connell hides their relationship from his friends. It’s something that happens in real life more often than we admit people care about what others think, and because of that, they end up hurting someone who genuinely matters to them. You can actually feel Marianne’s pain in those moments, which makes the story even more powerful.
When they move to college, everything changes. Marianne becomes more confident and socially active, while Connell starts to feel out of place and unsure of himself. This shift really shows how much our environment and the people around us can shape who we are.
Their relationship is very on-and-off throughout the story. They come close, then drift apart, and then find their way back again. Normally, this kind of back-and-forth might feel tiring, but here it feels natural because in real life, things are rarely clear. You can have strong feelings for someone, but still not be able to make things work at the right time.
The book also touches deeply on mental health. Connell goes through depression, and Marianne struggles with her self-worth. These parts don’t feel forced or dramatic they feel honest. It reminds you that even people who seem “normal” on the outside are dealing with things internally.
The ending isn’t a typical happy ending. There’s no perfect closure. Connell gets an opportunity to go abroad, and Marianne encourages him to take it. It shows that love isn’t always about staying together forever sometimes it’s about helping each other grow, even if that means letting go.
In the end, this book made me realize that “normal people” are actually quite complex. Love isn’t always simple, and relationships don’t always have clear answers.
Normal People teaches us that love can be strong but still complicated. Connell and Marianne help each other grow, even though they end up taking different paths in life.
This story isn’t perfect…
but maybe that’s what makes it feel so real.
